1875p Twenty Cent (1875-1878) NGC PR67 FINEST KNOWN $35,000.00 Just a beautiful coin. Originally produced to prevent consumers from being "short changed", this series has an interesting history. During the late 1860's and early 70's, Half Dimes began vanishing from circulation after the Mint Act of 1873 abolished the denomination. Storekeepers priced many items at 10c and 15c apiece, because of the lack of half dimes customers paying with quarters had to be satisfied with being "short changed". Minted from 1875-1878, public confusion between them and the quarter dollar was immediate and of course, much like the Susan B. Anthony Dollar (1979-1981), very unpopular. Interestingly enough, the coin had no effect on merchants "short changing" customers! This coin is absolutely original. The rims are bold, the strike is razor sharp. The proof surfaces are pristine and awash in natural colors (toning or patina) of blue, maroon, yellow, pink, orange, red and green. Under the toning, the devices are cameo. You could look for years before your would find a specimen more breathtaking! A numismatic work of art. |
