The Cardinal Spellman 1838p Eagle Coronet Liberty, Without Motto (1838-1839) PCGS and NGC PR65 1 of 4 ever produced FINEST KNOWN $3,000,000.00 A rarity of the very highest order; one of the 20 rarest coins in the world. This fabulous proof eagle ($10) is the finest known of four specimens ever produced. A fully struck, cameo gem, it's virtually free of flaws. As with most proofs, this coin exhibits razor-sharp detail and exquisitely delicate surfaces. Graded by both major grading services, it is widely believed that this coin has been conservatively graded and possesses all the characteristics necessary for a PR66 grade. Unavailable for the last 11 years, this is truly a one-of-a-kind rarity. This specimen served as the plate coin in both Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins and David Aker's United States Gold Coins, Volume V, Eagles 1795-1933. Purchased at auction in 1975 for $105,000 this piece has long been sought-after by collectors and investors. (An interesting side note; in the same auction a Class I 1804 dollar sold for $110,000. In the summer of 1999, the Childs 1804 Class I dollar, finest known of the surviving 15 specimens, sold for $4.14 million.) Attributed to the collection of Cardinal John Spellman of New York, this incredible rarity is one of the great classics in all of numismatics. For the connoisseur collector or investor, who understands and appreciates rarity, quality and opportunity. The crème de la crème of numismatics. |
